WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN. When I first started Motorcops.com, it never crossed my mind that someone I knew would be killed. Tragically, two friends have been killed in the line of duty and several others that I've photographed have died. In the weeks and months after my friend Deputy Larry Canfield was killed in the line of duty, the plans for the book and the establishment of a charity to assist the extended family, friends and fellow officers started to come together. I am still working on the 501(c)3 paperwork and the other details in starting such an organization. What had a profound impact on me was listening to one of the Deputies recount that when he got the terrible news and all of the area motor officer's families were dropping everything to gather together, how his son had to go pick up his little brother at school. The older son had to tell the youngest son that "... Tylor and Bryce's dad had been killed..." and how hard that was, not only for the son but for the dad hearing what had happened on the drive from the school to the house. And how now the youngest son has been afraid of his dad being out on the road on the motorcycle. What I want to do is raise money and maybe some products or tickets so that things can be done not only for the family of the fallen officer but for the officer's friends and families. Maybe get a local sports franchise to donate a few tickets and a limo so the kids can go to a ball game and be kids... or maybe order in pizzas for the department one day... send flowers to the mom just letting her know we haven't forgotten.... $5,000 for high school graduation.... In talking this through with some others, there are just a ton of things that could be done, even small gestures that let people know we're still thinking of their loved one and they aren't alone. I'll be putting together a website soon which will have some additional information, but those are some of my thoughts at this point. If you have additional ideas, I am very open to ideas and suggestions.
